This past Sunday, I had the opportunity to attend the Yuna concert at The Cedar Cultural Center. This show was an early show, doors opened at 7:00pm and show started right at 8pm. Time management was great at this show. The sets and intermissions were seamless and very precise, I really appreciated that about the show. I got there at 7:30pm and the show was done by 10:00pm, both artists had time after the show to interact and take pictures with their fans.
The supporting act for this concert was Fools Gold Record artist Bosco. Bosco is from Savannah, GA and she recently put out a joint project with DJ Speakerfoxx titled ‘Girls in the Yard‘. Bosco’s sound and genre of music can be classified as alternative and experimental with swag and soul. Her set was very energetic but intimate at the same time. It was energetic in the sense that she performed some up-tempo, feel good, dance records, she had a megaphone and invited people from the audience on stage to dance and sing with her. She was very engaging, she interacted with the crowd throughout her set and she used the whole stage. She was very active, she danced a lot, jumped around and even ended up in the crowd while performing. She had the crowd putting hands up, chanting and just having a great time. As she closed out her set, the crowd was sad because they thoroughly enjoyed her performance and she really got the crowd excited for Yuna. Her set was intimate because it was just herself and her DJ (Ella Hussle) and she also performed a few smooth and slow songs. I think her set was very balanced in it’s content and activity, it was very refreshing and I also really enjoyed the graphics she had behind her. They were very eye-catching and enchanting.

In case you are unfamiliar with Yuna and her music, here is a LITE summary. Yuna is a Singer-songwriter and entrepreneur from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She moved to Los Angeles about five years to fulfill her dream of becoming a successful recording artist. Her sound and genre of music can be classified as Pop, Alternative, Acoustic and Folk Rock. Some of her musical influences are: Lauryn Hill. Alanis Morrisette. TLC. Radiohead. Bjork. Feist. She is currently on tour in support of her new album ‘Chapters‘, which will be released on May 20th. Yuna made her return to Minneapolis this past Sunday (5/8) at The Cedar Cultural Center. In 2014, Yuna performed at Fine Line Music Cafe as she toured in support of her album ‘Nocturnal’ which was released in the previous year.
Yuna’s return to Minneapolis was nothing short of magical and successful. The crowd was extremely excited and engaged as she performed songs that they hold so near and dear to their hearts. They sang every word to her older songs and were very receptive to the newer material she performed. She started her set by doing her rendition of Beyonce’s song ‘Sorry’ off her Lemonade album and the crowd loved it. Yuna set the tone from the beginning of her show that this would be a very memorable experience. That was indeed what it was. Some songs she performed are: Mountains, Lullabies, Falling, Lights and Camera, I Want You Back off her albums Yuna and Nocturnal. She also performed: Lanes, Crush (featuring Usher) the lead single for her upcoming album Chapters and All I do, which she wrote with David Foster. She performed a sweet song in her native dialect (Malay) and the title of the song was “Wriiten in the stars”. It was so beautiful to see her perform this song and witness how mesmerized the crowd was as she performed. It was very endearing. After she finished her set, she came back for an encore performance to sing her song ‘Live you Life’, an empowering and selfless song. This was the perfect song to close out the show. Yuna’s set was very strong; she had a band with her and accompanying visuals to her songs playing in the background. She did a few acoustic and acapella songs as well. I thoroughly enjoyed this show and I’m glad that I was in attendance. I look forward to hearing her new album and hopefully seeing her live again soon. Her tour is still in full effect, make sure to check out the dates and stay updated with everything YUNA via her website.
