Minneapolis rising experimental R&B and soul artist l X l V the Lily, released her new song U Said produced by John Scott. The song was mixed and mastered by Andre Mariette (Timbral Studios). l X l V the Lily is pronounced L-X-L-V-the-Lily or Lula-the-Lily and she describes her musical aesthetic as “emotional, unpredictable soul with an electronic feel”. So it’s no surprise that she connected with John Scott on this record, they share similar musical aesthetic and influences. This song is straight-forward, unfiltered and stripped, it stems from a place of heartbreak, disappointment and misplaced trust. The song is based on real life event and is very personal to Lula. This song was a hard one for Lula to write and it took her a little while to actually complete it but she says, “the sonic dissonance of the beat definitely inspired me and I eventually just wrote honestly what I felt”. The beat is haunting and melancholy, which is undoubtedly the most fitting canvas for Lula’s soul-grasping vocals to rest on. It brings the concept and emotion embedded in this song to the forefront. One of the many reasons why Lula couldn’t have a picked a better producer for this song. John Scott and Lula are a match made in a dark but intriguing harmony on this song.
